Sharing the gift of literacy through volunteers since 1986
The ongoing mission of Literacy Unlimited is to provide a solid, comprehensive program for training volunteer tutors to teach basic reading, writing and computational skills to adult learners aged 16 or older, including those whose native language is not English. Our program is based in the main branch of the Framingham Public Library, which donates space and electricity and other in-kind services. In addition, we have satellite LU programs in public libraries in Natick, Marlborough and Wellesley.
The tutoring that the program provides is confidential, individualized, student-centered and free of charge. Adult learners and tutors, who usually work one-on-one, are carefully matched and provided with continuous support to ensure the best opportunity for students to reach their goals. Our 300 students come from 15 different communities around the Metrowest region and represent over 40 nationalities.

A part-time program coordinator, office manager and testing manager help administer LU. This staffing allows the office to be open 36 hours each week. The library is open and tutoring space is available for 67 hours each week. All potential students are interviewed and assessed to determine their level of need and are tested twice/year while they are participating in the program.
While students are waiting to be matched with a tutor, a process that can take up to a year, we provide conversation classes and other informal opportunities to help learners.
Major sources of funding for LU are the Massachusetts Department of Education, a Framingham Community Development Block grant, corporate and foundation grants and Friends of Literacy Unlimited.
To volunteer as a tutor, or to donate office supplies, contact the Literacy Unlimited office at 508-532-5574, or e-mail us at fplmail4@minlib.net.
