Become a champion for literacy
Imagine your life without the written word. How would you go grocery shopping, enjoy a great book on the beach, read to your kids or help them with their homework? How would you work? What types of jobs would be available to you? What would your life be like with these limitations?
Sadly, over a million adults in Massachusetts lack high-school-level reading and writing skills. Some of these are native English speakers; others are immigrants who are struggling to start their lives anew here in this country. And the undisputed fact is that without basic literacy skills, adults are more likely to be poor, without any real prospect of moving up the economic ladder. Their children are likely to suffer a similar fate, because the best indicator of a child's success in school is the educational background of the parents.
